Stair climbing is an excellent workout. Before my senior year of football, I spent five months running stairs at the high school. I ran between 40 and 70 minutes a day, often with a weighted vest and ankle weights, and burned off seventy pounds of fat in that time. I made First Team All-District Defensive Lineman, and the stairs were a big part of that. The conditioning and endurance are amazing. It's not for just anyone, though. If you are not committed, it is next to worthless. But if you have the fire inside you (or, in my case, insanity), you can use stairs to achieve incredible things.

Great to hear Jerry! It is amazing at what can be accomplished if you just get off the couch and get active. If you have life insurance, I would advise you to ask for an update to your policy as since you are in better health, you can qualify for a lower rate.

I wholeheartedly believe this. Since combining stair climbing to my exercise routine, I have dropped 80lbs and 8" off my waist in the last 22 months. Never felt better in my life.

I agree. This is a great workout. I should do this soon. I run/walk 1/4 off and on MWF's and I feel great. But ai should try the stairs too. Thanks for sharing.

Doing the stairs was always my favorite work out! Not sure why, but it was! And, way more fun than the stair machine at the gym!

I've been working up to 6 sets a day of the 9 flights in my office building. Your article confirms the benefits of breaking it up into 3 sessions a day, and also the overall strength benefits. Thanks!

I use to do stairs all the time - going up 20 floors and then taking the elevator down. I would do 6 sets.
I'm a racewalker and my coach didn't want me to stair climb anymore. Anyway, I defied my coach today and did my 6 sets ( I haven't done stairs for 7 years). I couldn't believe how much I missed them. I just read your article and thank you- I'm going to continue my stair climbing. I find that stairclimbing targets the more powerful muscles- hamstrings, glutes, thighs , calves etc.
