Possibly not the same thing, but I had been seeing an osteopath for persistant neck pain. I'd already seen a GP and had been prescribed an anti-inflammatory (for a non-related knee injury) which helped quite a lot, but after seeing the osteo for 6 weeks, he suggested going back to the GP for an MRI order. Had the MRI done and found that I had quite severe arthritis C1-C7.

Now I'm at the stage where I really don't know what to do to relieve the pain (and I'm not expecting an answer from here, only from my GP and/or my osteo). I can use nurofen every second day which helps a lot, or massages, which also help (the following day), or a combination of both - but I also understand that taking NSAIDs regularly can be dangerous to my liver. Its a bit of a quandry, and I'm not really sure what to do from here. GP isn't suggesting anything.

John,

I suggest you slow down in your reading, the quote was "The basis for this is a fairly rare" not "fairy tale" and while you feel chiropractors are a joke, that is your opinion. The instances of death from neck manipulation have been well documented and mentioned in the article. Just as their are good MDs, there are bad ones too. Chiropractors notwithstanding.

Chiropractors are a joke. I will NEVER address them as "Dr." Their are many, amny cases in the medical literaure of sad examples of instantaneous death from forceful chiropractic manipulation of the neck. It is not a "fairy tale." Become more informed please. Your article is ridiculous.

Amber,

The problem with your comment, even if you believe it to be true, it that it is similar to painting a masterpiece with a wide brush. It just can't be done. You are lumping all MDs into the camps of "we only prescribe meds" and all chiropractors in the "we are the only ones that really care about you". While there are bad doctors out there, just as there are bad chiropractors, I believe that each generally tried to treat the patient well. If you talk to your doctor of the options you want, they will almost always prescribe the route that works best for you, but you have to talk to them. My experience with many chiropractors is they find out how many visits your insurance allows per year and then recommends that many visits. I feel that is fraud, but that is my opinion.

I have been working for a chiropractor for almost 5 years now, I'm the CA and I believe chiropractic should be your first choice before going to a M.D. MDs want to prescribe you with multiple pain meds, injections, then if no relief, surgery. If your spine is misaligned pain meds are not going to correct it. So while your doped up with pain meds, it is hiding the actual pain, so you go on doing the reguar active daily living activities and not realizing how much disruption you are actually doing to your body, because you cant feel it. So no your pain isnt going to go away so your MD is going to suggest surgery and 80% of people have increased pain after surgery. So going to a chiropractor should be your first choice, it will save you alot of money!

It is highly advisable to go see ANOTHER doctor when the one you are seeing isn't giving you the treatment you feel you need. Substituting a doctor with a chiropractor isn't a real solution, as which has been stated here already, there are a lot of "quacks" out there in the chiropractic industry. Be smart with your health. Do your research, ask tough questions and don't be afraid to ask for and get a second opinion.

@ Layla.... STOP already! There is NO WAY an MD would give you a TON of pills! And I refuse to believe that MDs couldn't help you but a SIMPLE "Quack" chiropractor COULD... and do it within 3 visits? Get OUTTA here!

Psss... hey, over here... I have to whisper so the MDs don't hear. Stories like Layla happen ALL THE TIME. I know because I'm a chiropractor. So many MDs... so high and mighty that they can't stand it when a chiropractor actually helps someone they can't. It's truly amazing the nasty talk that goes on about chiropractic... from MDs to physical therapists. You would think that a chiropractor goes through about 30 college credits... not 400 +... which we ALL DO. Imagine... 400 plus credits. After you realize a bachelors is approx 120ish and takes four years, you can't possibly bad-mouth chiropractic training.

I will say that there are bad chiropractors... probably more-so than in other professions. If you end up finding a good chiropractor, they are often better than a good MD. There is a time and place for everything... but medicine shouldn't be a staple in the American diet and it is. Know when to say when to the drugs, and give chiropractic a try.

Good to see a story like Layla's... I have patients coming from a couple of PT clinics down the road, and often hear how the PTs bad-mouth chiropractors. Really unprofessional... especially considering we have a doctorate and they ONLY have a masters. (that should provoke a high and mighty response right there)... because you know that the chiropractic doctorate is really just pretend, so we can feel better about ourselves.

I was a gymnast for 10 years and have chronic neck and low back pain as a result. After emptying countless bottles of pain killers I decided to talk to my MD about the pain. For three years He filled me up with zanex and flexeril and injections at the ortho. surgeon...1 injection put me in the hospital for 3 days. Then after three years I'd had enough and I begged him to please recommend something, ANYTHING to help me. He put me through another 2 months of MRI, CT scans and blood tests. He even suggested I go and see a psychiatrist weekly. My insurance did not pay for any of it. Then after everything came back normal and clear, he told me to just "jump in the pool with the old ladies" and swim around. I started crying in his office as he laughed at me. I still do not know if he was serious. I really hope he was not because I am 27 years old. My husband took me to a chiropractor and it took 3 visits for my pain to go away...completely. You chiropractors are amazing. I don't care what my medical doctor says, you helped me and he would not or could not. Thank you. I am so sorry that I was so skeptical for so long, I had to experience chiropractic to truly believe in it.

I had a great exprience with my Chiropractor in West Orange, NJ. He is wonderful. Because of him, I was able to get rid of my neck and shoulder pain. I recently moved to North Carolina, so I have to find a new Chiropractor who will provide me with the same relief. I may have to visit muliple chiropractor, but it will be worth it in end when I find one similar to my old D.C. (which is going to be hard).

David, I would like to rephrase your words a little. Chiropractors to not 'treat' the conditions mentioned specifically. The body does heal itself through a functional nervous system. It is through the chiropractic adjustment that allow nervous transmissions to flow unobstructed to the affected tissues allowing the self healing properties of the body to take effect. I think the word treat is also where the MD gets his chiropractic phobia from as they treat disease with drugs and surgery per the definition of medicine via the Medical Practice act of 1913.

As far as chiropractors being phobic of MDs there is history behind that. Though I wouldn't call it phobia. No, speaking for myself I think anger is a better description. Over the last century MDs have tried on numerous occasions to destroy chiropractic. To this day the AMA still attempts through state medical associations to harass and undermine the chiropractic profession. Fear isn't in the chiropractic mindset, yet anger at being mistreated and maligned is certainly there and justifiably so.
