We are now well into the holidays folks. With Thanksgiving already over, you may be facing the annual predicament of how to maintain your current weight, or even weight loss trend. Doing so becomes like double black diamond dieting as well meaning neighbors, friends and family try to sabotage your progress with all kinds of decadent baked goods!

To this end, Medifast has introduced its holiday survival guide for the purpose of addressing the weight loss challenges we all encounter during the holiday season, measured from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day. According to a survey conducted by National Institute of Health, the average American usually gains about seven pounds during the holiday season–perhaps because NIH also says that a person consumes a mean of 7100 calories (holy cow!!!!!) during a normal holiday dinner feast…um, with binges like that, I suppose a seven pound gain is lucky.

Holiday stress combined with the continuous availability of delectably fattening foods makes the task of healthy eating more challenging during this time of year. And to make matters worse, we are all trying to look good when we get together with our friends and family! The Medifast Diet survivial guide is a tool that addresses this specifically difficult time of year for dieters by including very holiday-ish recipes and treats that can help you feel like you are enjoying the holidays without having them permanently affixed to your bottom! Healthy recipes made out of Medifast products like pumpkin pie, holiday stuffing and peppermint patty shakes combined with a variety of helpful eating tips can keep you on track when you most need the motivation to do so. Also- Medifast coupons can be used for these products so you don’t have to spend a lot to stay on track.

The survival guide can be downloaded right from the Medifast site under “Event Survival,” or here. There is also a special “holiday support” message board where users can share their experiences and tips about surviving the holidays with as little permanent damage to their diet as possible.

If you are new to the Medifast diet, just looking for extra encouragement, or planning ahead for the seven extra pounds you might gain this season, visit the Medifast website to learn more: The 5 and 1 Medifast meal plan encourages people to eat one “lean and green” meal, and five pre-packed Medifast meals. Medifast offers nearly 70 different types of foods including chili, pudding, cold and hot drinks, oatmeal, bars, soups and shakes. An average person loses about 2-5 pounds a week with the Medifast weight loss program. So start now and you will not only stave off the extra holiday padding, but you will get a head start so you can think of some other resolution besides losing weight for the new year!

How to Make a Diet Shake That Tastes Great

Think about the last time you had a malt or milk shake. Was it smooth, creamy and memorable, or chunky, inconsistent in flavor and disappointing? When making a Medifast diet shake two things can make a big difference: the order in which you add the ingredients and measuring the amount of ice used. It’s like the difference between a newly paved road and one full of pot holes.

Let’s start with a list of items you need:

(1) Medifast shake packet. We used chocolate.

Large plastic or insulated cup for cold beverages (about 18 oz)

Blender

5 oz. of cold water or skim milk

7 oz. of ice

1 oz (one shot) of fresh espresso (optional)

2 teaspoons of sugar free syrup

*You can use any type of Medifast shake or sugar free syrup that you like.
**Pull the ice from the freezer first and let that sit out while you gather the other ingredients.

Instructions for Making a Diet Shake:

1. In a blender, add 5 oz. of cold water and 1 teaspoon of sugar free syrup to taste. Please note that you’re only using 1 of the 2 teaspoons of syrup at this point. Put the lid on the blender and hit the mix button for a couple of seconds.

2. Add the shot of FRESH espresso or coffee (optional) and the Medifast shake powder. Use fresh coffee; otherwise it will give the shake a bitter taste. NOTE: If you are not using espresso/coffee be sure to add one more ounce of cold water or skim milk. Cover and hit blend to mix the ingredients, about five seconds.

3. Measure out about 7 ounces of ice, or about 7 ice cubes. When you break up the ice cube tray, try to use the ones that break up along with the shavings, rather than solid cubes. Add to blender, cover, and use the chop button. Blend with other ingredients until it reaches a creamy, but thick, consistency.

4. Unplug the blender and taste the mixture. If you feel it needs more flavor add the second teaspoon of sugar free syrup, cover, plug the blender back in, and mix for about five seconds.

5. Pour into a tall (18 oz.) cup suitable for cold beverages. Using an insulated beverage cup will keep this colder longer. You should notice as you pour that the shake is a consistently thick, well blended and creamy.

That’s it! Pretty simple, but by blending the ingredients before adding the ice (in pre-measured amounts) it makes a big difference in the consistency and taste of the shake.

Make sure you have enough Medifast shakes and hot chocolate packets because this month we are creating Medifast friendly versions of your favorite coffee-shop holiday drinks. If you haven’t already, read our previous posts on how to make a Medifast shake that tastes like a malt; now let’s chat about how to make a Peppermint Mocha shake.

Turn Medifast Hot Chocolate Into a Peppermint Mocha!

Today, we’re going to make the hot version of a shake using a Medifast hot chocolate packet. Let’s call this the MediMocha with Pep!

What you’ll need:

(1) Medifast hot chocolate packet

Hot beverage mug

Few tablespoons of cold water

6 oz. of hot water

1 oz (one shot) of FRESH espresso

2 teaspoons of sugar free peppermint syrup

Fat free whipped cream (optional topping)

Unsweetened sugar free/fat free chocolate shavings (optional topping)

NOTE: If you don’t have espresso, but want a coffee flavor just substitute the hot water with coffee to taste (i.e. 3 oz of hot water and 3 oz of coffee, or 1 oz of hot water and 5 oz of coffee, or even 6 oz of coffee and no hot water).

Instructions:

1. In a cup suitable for hot beverages, add your Medifast hot chocolate packet. Add a few tablespoons of COLD water and begin mixing the hot chocolate mix. The purpose of this is to dissolve the powder and avoid clumps.

2. Next, add 6 oz of hot water followed by 1 oz of espresso (size of a shot glass). If you’re using a water to coffee mixture instead of espresso add that. Stir well.

3. Stir in 2 teaspoons of sugar free peppermint syrup.

4. If you’d like a sweeter drink, add a little bit of Stevia. You can also and add a small amount of fat free whipped cream and natural unsweetened chocolate shavings to the top off this drink, or even some red sprinkles on special days. Just remember, you’ll need to make up for those calories elsewhere during your day.

Now raise your glass and toast to good health!

Variations:
This recipe can be altered into any type of mocha you prefer, just substitute the 2 teaspoons of peppermint for whatever type of sugar free syrup you prefer.

Christmas is finally only a few days away meaning all those delicious meals are even closer. If you’re worried that you are not going to get through this holiday season without sticking to a healthy diet why not have Medifast help keep you on track.

There are many ways you can get your diet on track quickly, but if you do not have the drive to do it then the process may be hard. Instead of dealing with the struggle of failing another diet get involved with one that will work easily with your lifestyle.

Most people are worried that throughout the holidays they are going to gain excessive amounts of weight. This is usually true for people that do not take the time to think about what they are eating. Instead of throwing yourself into the holidays unprepared think ahead. Plan your meals accordingly.

There are many meals that are high in calories, carbohydrates and fat which can quickly destroy any diet. Instead of consuming endless amounts of these foods replace your meals with one of the many Medifast Meals. There are many options available that you can choose from. This will allow you to get exactly what you want and still enjoy everything you are eating.

Instead of worrying about having to lose excessive amounts of weight after this holiday season take control of your diet now. Incorporate a Medifast Diet Plan into your life and save yourself from struggling afterwords. There is no reason why you can’t make it through Christmas without putting on weight when you have the help from Medifast every step of the way.
