The idea of cleanses are appealing to most people except they do not want to go the starvation or ‘liquids only’ route so they try supplements and teas with diet. These are okay but you can cleanse with moderate solids even over a 2-4 week period.

I suggest you wean off caffeine before you start this so that you are not taking any caffeine in prior to this diet. The headaches from the withdrawal will make the diet harder on you.

Raw foods are the best way to go but steamed and soups are also an excellent way to cleanse without having to have liquids only or stop foods altogether.

My suggestion for the raw food cleanse would be to work in juicing along with the meals.

Breakfast would be a juice made from items such as dandelion, parsley, romaine lettuce, strawberry, orange, grapefruit and coconut. If you have spirulina then you will want to add this in as well.

Lunch would be a raw salad of mixed bitter greens, blueberries, some nuts and seeds, balsamic vinegar and Udos oil. I would avoid the use of heavy spices and stick with non sodium, garlic, peppers and such.

Snacks between meals would be a minestrone type soup made vegan with no starches or tubers. Any veggies would be well chopped in to very small pieces and you would want to include parsley, garlic, cloves, cilantro, spinach, tomato, chili peppers, mustard greens and limes. Avoid carrots, peas and starchy choices. Go crazy with fresh herbs such as rosemary, bay leaves, basil, oregano, sage and celery leaves. Being very liquid, you can have as much as you like and can also use this for meals.

Dinner would be similar to lunch but with the exception of adding a small amount of feta, dry cottage cheese, goat cheese or yogurt to the meal for the good bacteria’s they contain which will help in the cleanse. In addition you would take 1-2 Tbs of Psyllium each day.

Water would be 2-4 liters per day and very essential to the process not only for the flush but also to help release the toxins without the nausea or dizzy side effects that extreme cleanse can cause.

For those who simply cannot do this, then you can try including a small portion of 4 oz daily of steamed or grilled poultry, fish or eggs. Keep it all very plain, again only using natural flavoring like garlic, onion, cracked pepper and Cheyenne pepper. These along with parsley are excellent aids in cleansing.

You can purchase some diuretic teas but take them sparingly to avoid dehydration. Simple water loss is not the whole point and being well hydrated is very important so the diuretic effect of the foods is already enough without adding too many teas per week.

There are many reasons people seek cleanses such as acne, candida, IBS, diet fluctuations in high frequency, previously on medications or weight loss. These suggestions above will help you work toward a cleanse that suits your needs and body type. Hunger is not suggested but can be a normal part of a cleanse, its all up to your goals and requirements.

To assure good health, you should committ yourself to reducing your exposure to toxins. Some of these are strategies that you’re familiar with, but they’re definitely worth a reminder, while others will almost certainly surprise you:

Reduce Your Chemical Exposures

Don’t wear your outside shoes indoors. Along with the dirt and dust from outdoors comes residue from diesel auto exhaust, lead, pesticides and other toxins.

For floors, choose wood, tile and stone, which are less likely to harbor and generate toxins than carpets.

Keep your house clean, minimizing dust-collecting knickknacks so environmental toxins don’t have the chance to accumulate.

Filter, filter, filter. Filters should be changed every six weeks in homes with a central forced-air heating/cooling system. If you have a different type, consider installing a portable air-filter system. Filter your tap water, too.

Minimize use of products that contain harmful chemicals. Buy unscented, eco-friendly cleaners and laundry detergents. Drink and serve food from glass containers, many plastic ones are made with toxic chemicals that can leach into your food.

Don’t Eat Toxins

Organic fruits, vegetables and meats contain the fewest toxins. It’s especially important to buy organic apples, bell peppers, blueberries, celery, cherries, imported grapes, kale, collard greens, nectarines, peaches, potatoes, spinach and strawberries; these fruits and vegetables, in nonorganic form, are most likely to be drenched in pesticides.

Generally less toxic produce (meaning it’s not as important to buy organic) includes asparagus, avocado, cabbage, cantaloupe, eggplant, grapefruit, honeydew melon, kiwi, mango, onions, pineapple, sweet corn, peas, sweet potato and watermelon.

Be picky about fish. Farmed fish can contain significant levels of toxic PCBs, chemicals that can wreak havoc with your health, so eat only wild salmon and other varieties. (This rules out most of what’s sold in restaurants and supermarkets.) Avoid fish with a high mercury content, including swordfish, shark, tuna and orange roughy — check this list to see what’s safe to eat and what’s not.

Buy organic butter. Nonorganic butter can be high in PCBs!

By minimizing exposure to toxins and supporting your body’s innate healing processes, you can gradually take control of toxins and restore your health. In just weeks, expect increased energy, less brain fog and fewer allergy symptoms such as congestion. Over time, if you keep up the good work, it will only get better.

Many Americans are up in arms over the BP oil spill in the Gulf, yet some of the same people remain unconcerned over the atrocious amount of chemicals they are soaking into their own bodies. Studies show that the vast majority of us harbor traces or metabolites of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), dioxins, bisphenol A, heavy metals and other hazardous substances in our bodies. This toxic load contributes to a wide range of maladies ranging from “mere” confusion and fatigue to diabetes, lupus and cancer.

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed and powerless in the face of information like this, but don’t. Most people can achieve real health benefits by incorporating detoxification into their health routines. Walter J. Crinnion, ND, chair of the environmental medicine department at the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine and Health Sciences in Scottsdale, Arizona just published Clean, Green & Lean, a book about getting healthy and slim by cleaning up your diet. Dr. Crinnion’s suggestions for how to clean up your system aren’t extreme; you’ll barely notice you’re making an effort, but you will take note of how much better you feel!

Contaminated at Birth

Toxic exposure begins in the womb and worsens over time as chemicals accumulate in your body. A recent study detected 232 chemicals foreign to the human body in the umbilical cord blood of 10 newborn babies from the US! The Environmental Protection Agency and World Health Organization report that about 85,000 different chemicals are currently registered for use in manufacturing and 800 new ones are introduced each year, many of which have little or no data on toxicity.

According to Dr. Crinnion, toxic chemicals can attack three primary body systems:

Your immune system. By weakening your body’s defenses, toxic chemicals contribute to allergies, asthma, autoimmune diseases such as lupus and rheumatoid arthritis, chronic viral or fungal infections, chemical sensitivity, cancers, etc.

Your nervous system. Chemicals can affect mental function, leading to fatigue, confusion, poor concentration, memory disturbances, mood swings, anxiety, depression, headaches, nerve pain, balance problems, tremors, muscle weakness and more, even potentially Parkinson’s disease.

Your endocrine system. Damage to the hormonal system can potentially cause early puberty and reproductive difficulties, ongoing hormonal problems, diabetes, obesity and cancers, such as liver cancer and leukemia.

Purge Your Body of Toxins

To stimulate excretion of toxins, Dr. Crinnion recommends…

Drink three cups of unsweetened organic green tea daily, it’s rich in antioxidant polyphenols, which help flush the toxins from your body.

Eat organic brown rice several times a week, its fiber helps move toxins out in your stool. If you don’t like brown rice, take a rice bran fiber supplement.

Include more chlorophyll in your diet. Known as “nature’s cleanser,” chlorophyll neutralizes destructive chemical pollutants and prevents the build-up of toxins. Good food sources include green, leafy vegetables, seaweed, and green drinks such as wheat grass juice “shots” available at health-food stores. Another option: Blue green algae supplements such as spirulina and chlorella, also available at health-food stores.

The less sugar you eat, the better. It suppresses your immune system and your liver’s ability to purge toxins.

Sweat it out. With your doctor’s okay, take a sauna (about 135°F) several times a week to release toxins in your sweat. Enhance your ability to detoxify by using a loofah to remove dead skin cells and unclog pores.

Do You Need a Detox Expert?

Dr. Crinnion suggests everyone should follow the above strategies. But if, after giving this detox lifestyle a try for two months, you still find that you are experiencing problems such as allergies, brain fog or fatigue, consult a physician who is knowledgeable about environmental toxins. You can find a list of physicians who have studied with Dr. Crinnion at his Website. A trained and experienced doctor will help you identify and eliminate toxic exposures and cleanse harmful chemicals from your body with a personalized program that may include diet, supplements (e.g., magnesium, vitamin B-6, selenium and glutathione), hydrotherapy and other strategies.

For thousands of years, countless cultures and spiritual traditions have promoted rituals of cleansing and detoxification to purify body, mind and spirit; but with the advent of food production as big business, our current culture has been largely drawn away from these simple practices. Now a growing number of health conscious leaders and holistic health practitioners have begun to study the destructive effects of our poor quality food and soil. They also are speaking out about the excessive eating habits of our industrialized society and advocating a return to these simple cleansing rituals.

Improve your body and soul

Simple cleansing practices can be very helpful for almost anyone! If you have any of these symptoms: skin breakouts, frequent colds, allergies, muddled thinking, weight gain, exhaustion, constipation or difficulty digesting food, a body cleanse can especially benefit you.

Or if you are just tired of being dependent on sugar or caffeine to energize you and you want to tap into the infinite power source of your soul then you should consider trying one. Here are some personal reasons why I suggest them:

1. A cleanse can be a profound turning point in your relationship with food (it was for me). When you break from foods that you know do not support you for a period of time, it can loosen their negative grip on you. This results in feeling more powerful and confident in your body.

You can let go of unhealthy food cravings and bad habits and never crave them again. I know this is true because every time I cleanse I have intense cravings for particular foods. For example, during one of my first cleanses, I had been eating processed protein bars every day. During the cleanse I stopped eating them. I craved them like crazy, then once the cleanse was over I had one and was disgusted by the artificial-ness of it.

Taking a break from unhealthy food you know doesn’t support your body and spirit can break you free from the power of unhealthy habits and cravings and give you the confidence and trust in your body to not eat them anymore.

2. Cleansing can add years to your life by restoring your internal organs and moving toxins out of your body. The time you spend cleansing will rest your digestive system so that your liver, kidneys and lymphatic system can move the toxins and accumulated waste out of your body. This process enables the body to rid itself of excess weight, prevent disease and bring overall balance to the body.

3. My favorite part about cleansing is the spiritual awakening that may occur in the absence of using food to stuff emotions or habitual food cravings; going without can make you realize how much you really don’t need many of the things you think you do.

While breaking from unhealthy and habitual foods, the body may have cellular memories of past emotions and experiences. When you rid the body of these old memories and emotions, space for new intentions, dreams and visions is created. It clears the space so that your Spirit can talk to you. While cleansing it’s possible to feel an intense high, unbounded energy, clarity and radiance.
