Every single day people are consuming sodium and tend to be unaware of how much they are actually consuming. It is apart of every person’s diet and thousands of people find themselves consuming too much everyday. Ideally for the average person the minimum requirement of sodium intake is approximately 1,500 milligrams (mg) per day.

Most people consume this amount easily, but many are known to exceed the maximum recommended amount of 2,300 mg a day. Statistics have been done and it is said that the average American male consumes between 3,100 to 4,700 mg of sodium each day and women consume between 2,300 to 3,100 mg each day. Women’s intake seems to be less due to the lower calorie intake by women compared to men.

When a person consumes above average amounts of sodium they are leading themselves down the path to high blood pressure, which is also referred to as hypertension. It begins to develop as a person gets older and starts to have more affect with age. Sodium can do damage on a person’s body at any age, even if you are reducing your intake now.

It is wise to maintain a proper sodium intake at a young age so as you get older your defense system has a higher chance of battling against high blood pressure. If you are someone in your mid 20′s early 30′s that consumes an excessive amount of sodium you could be damaging your health for many years down the road. When you get older you could become more conscience of your sodium intake, but the damage is already done and makes the reduction of blood pressure more difficult. Reducing blood pressure even when it is still at the normal levels is something a person should do by reducing the daily sodium intake before it becomes an issue.
