Health Related: Omega-3 Essential Fatty Acids

The heart health and nutritional benefits of Omega-3 fatty acids have been well documented in the past decade; long gone are the recommendations for trying to achieve of a fat free menu. Rather, with the advent research on good fats that promote heart health, the new goal of any dieter should be to include the right fats into your meal plan. Omega-3 fatty acids are the best fats, those that provide the most bang for your buck…or most bang for your calorie if we are talking about an efficient, metabolism boosting, low calorie diet-which we are.

Consuming the right fats is now thought to be essential not only for dieters who want to lose weight, but for everyone. For weight loss seekers, the body seems to actually hold onto weight when deprived of fat. Consuming the right amount of healthy fat sends a signal to your body, essentially allowing it to let go of excess fat by not depriving it of the fat that it needs for critical functions. Omega-3 fats are thought to be responsible for several health promoting conditions:

  • Cognitive development and function
  • Cardiovascular health
  • Prevention of high cholesterol, asthma, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and certain types of cancer

In addition, Omega-3 fats are thought to help promote weight loss by keeping you feeling full and promoting more efficient fat burn.

The Medifast diet encourages consumption of Omega-3 fatty acids from a variety of nutrient rich sources. Many of the Medifast meals are enriched with Omega fats. But your Lean and Green meal should also, where possible, include an Omega-3 rich protein such as salmon, halibut, shrimp, tofu, tuna, cod, eggs, etc. In addition to getting the right fats from your food, Medifast also advises a heart healthy supplement called Super Omega-3. This supplement can add a powerful boost to your plan, increasing your momentum and your healthy habits on the Medifast plan.
